Glühwein is a wonderful spiced, mulled wine served all across Europe from one Christmas Market to the other. You can make this with either red wine or white wine. If you can't get to Germany this year for the Christmas Market, make some Glühwein at home!
2 bottles of red wine, like a Syrah or Côtes du Rhône
2 cinnamon sticks
4 star anise
20 whole cloves
1 and 1/2 cup super fine sugar
1 and 1/2 cup water
In a sauce pot, add the sugar, water, cinnamon stick, star anise and cloves and bring to a boil. Reduce to low. Peel the oranges and place the skins in the pot. Squeeze in the juice of both oranges, being sure to remove the pulp first through a strainer. Cook for 30 minutes until nice a syrupy. After 30 minutes, add the wine and continue heating on low. You never want to boil the wine. Keep the lid on to keep it warm while it cooks and serve when ready to enjoy!
